Three killed, four others taken to hospital after wrong-way crash

Two men and a 4-year-old girl died early Monday as a result of a wrong-way crash in Marengo Township, according to Michigan State Police.

The crash happened on westbound I-94 east of 22 1/2 Mile Road when the driver of a Ford pick-up truck traveled east in the westbound lanes and crashed into a minivan, troopers said.

The driver of the pick-up truck, a 42-year-old Massachusetts man, died at the scene, according to state police.

A 46-year-old man from Indiana and a 4-year-old girl in the minivan also died at the scene, troopers said.

Four additional passengers inside the minivan, one adult and three children, were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to state police.

It is unknown whether or not the driver of the pickup truck was wearing a seatbelt, but the driver and adult passenger of the minivan were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, troopers said.

Three children inside the minivan, however, were not in child safety seats or wearing seatbelts, according to state police.

It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol use were factors in the crash.

Troopers remind drivers that Michigan’s Child Passenger Safety Law requires children younger than four years old to ride in a car seat in the rear.

Specifically, children must be property buckled in a car seat or booster seat until they are 8 years old or 4-feet, 9-inches tall, troopers said.

Monday’s crash comes after two separate wrong-way crashes in Grand Rapids and Grand Haven Sunday morning.

A 63-year-old Byron Center man died after a 30-year-old Grand Rapids man traveled south in the northbound lanes of US-131, and crashed into the 63-year-old head on, troopers said.

The 30-year-old was taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to state police.

A 28-year-old Norton Shores woman was taken into custody at 3:45 a.m. Sunday after she drove north in the southbound lanes of US-31, and crashed into a deputy who drove into the median to alert the woman to stop, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
