14-year-old boy dies while running 5k

A 14-year-old boy named Knox MacEwen tragically fell and passed away on November 4, 2023, during a 5K race in Florida, according to NBC 6 South Florida.

Knox participated in the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) at his high school, Western High, located in Davie, Florida.

Sadly, his young life ended too soon when he had a heart attack while taking part in a 5K event organized by the program.

According to NBC Miami, the young boy was taken to Memorial Hospital Miramar, where he was sadly declared dead later on.

It is with a heavy heart that I have to tell you some really sad news about our Wildcat community. This morning, one of our JROTC students died after being taken to the hospital, said Principal Jimmy Arrojo in a message to students, families, and staff. He added, “I want to express my sincerest sympathies to his family, friends, teachers, and classmates during this difficult time as they deal with this huge loss.”

He went on to say, “I encourage everyone in our Wildcat community to come together and support the family with your prayers during this really tough time. Just so you know, there will be grief counselors on campus this week for anyone who needs help or someone to talk to.”

JROTC is a high school program supported by the U.S. Armed Forces. It focuses on helping students build their character by teaching them important skills like self-discipline, self-confidence, and leadership.

Knox was active in the Crossway Church in Cooper City and was loved by many.

Pastor Jon Elswick talked about the sad loss, saying, “When something terrible happens like this, especially to someone as cherished as Knox, it affects everyone in our church community. We have students who were his friends and family members who know his family, so it’s been a really tough time for all of us.”

He went on to say, “A few days back, Knox’s dad told me that Knox was the best among us. I really like that saying because if you knew Knox, you’d totally agree. He was a teenager who made you think of someone loving, kind, and super funny.”

We are so very sorry for the loss of such a young life. May he rest in peace.
